Back when OutKast dropped Bombs Over Baghdad in 2000, many people (including this brilliant RBMVibes writer) scratched their head wondering “Who is B.O.B.?” Back then B.O.B. was just the name of a song, but now B.O.B. is the latest rapper from Atlanta and he wants you to ask just that question, in a bit more terse language. He’s the latest rapper bringing us that funky fresh Atlanta touch. And maybe coincidentally, he has a decidedly OutKast feel.
The Atlanta-influence in B.O.B.’s work has definitely been of benefit to B.O.B.’s career. He was discovered in T.I.’s club and works with producers that have been behind the songs of many successful southern artists. But B.O.B.’s work expands beyond regional taste and he tours with East Coast rappers like Nas, A Tribe Called Quest and Mos Def. XXL featured B.O.B. as a member of the Hip Hop Class of ‘09 with several other up and coming acts (to be featured in a Fresh Baked Goods coming soon). B.O.B.’s place within the class is certainly well deserved. As a thinking rapper, and true artist, B.O.B.’s prolific pre-release work offers us a glimpse into what is sure to be a great career. He’s also one to keep his act fresh, commenting on current trends in the industry and keeping his work fresh. A visit to his MySpace page shows his range and expansive music knowledge.
As for what B.O.B. stands for? While Bob is the shortened form of his real name, Robert, the artist has yet to put out a definitive meaning for the acronym, giving plenty suggestions for what it could be. RBMVibes would like to suggest Brain Outshines Body? Or maybe not….
