Let’s get straight to the point, times aren’t easy! Whether it be MTA fare hikes, layoffs, or bottle prices at the club going up, we are all effected one way or the other by these harsh economic times. So, what’s a girl (or guy) to do? Get creative!
Recession proof jobs aren’t that easy to come by now. Many require specific training to gain even an entry level position. However, don’t let the thought of a little schooling deter you. Sallie Mae may not be anyone’s friend right now but there are options that are free or low cost. Here are a few suggestions that have been ranked recently in major national papers as seeing a rise for job availability:
* DJ’s-There’s just something about being broke that makes folks want to go out and enjoy themselves. Parties are not lacking. In fact, if you’re like me your inbox is filled with invites for club nights Sunday to Sunday and well someone has to provide the soundtrack to our lives. DJ’s are needed for various events from corporate fetes to local birthday parties. Many are training for these positions from various walks of life-account executives, teachers, etc. You can check out training programs at places like Dubspot and Scratch DJ Academy.
*Bartenders/Wait staff-while you’re out sweating it on the dance floor someone has to keep your glass flowing. Also, someone needs to serve up those chicken nuggets at three in the morning once you’ve left the club. In this case, think broader than scoring a job at Nobu or Tenjune. Swallow your pride and realize that the money’s still green at places like Subway and your neighborhood drinking hole.

*Teachers-someone has got to help make sure our future leaders and CEO’s don’t fall prey to the same mistakes of our current ones. The NYC Department of Education offers scholarships via programs like NYC Teaching Fellows. High need areas are math and science and males, by my observation, are much needed to help mold our youth.
*Allied Health Professions-don’t know what an Occupational Therapist does, well google it. Speech pathologist, medical assistants, and dental technicians to name a few are all areas where jobs can be found with the right qualifications. The NYC DOE also offers scholarships for graduate level training with guaranteed job placement upon completion for some of these professions as well. Sad to say, but folks always get sick and need help to get better.
So now that we at RBMVibes have helped you to expand your view of what’s a viable option we hope you continue to dream big, get creative, and when you’ve got a dollar to spare come back and buy a ringtone or support one of our events!
