E to the R …with all these girls. Yes Erup has made it big time, not only blowing up airwaves in Jamaica but also attaining status here in the United States getting constant radio play as well as name recognition since he stuck the name in the beginning of the song. And yes, while these attributes and techniques for big time establishment can be assigned to several other artists making a name for themselves (see Serani and Laden), Erup leaves his own distinctive mark on contemporary dancehall.
The infectious, “Click Mi Finger” on the Gun Box Riddim is the song that has been earning Erup attention and accolades. (The riddim also features songs by veterans Beenie Man. T.O.K, and Elephant Man). But on Erup’s debut, Fully Govern to the World, there are are other songs worth a listen that give a listeners a better insight into the newcomers mindset and style. To paint a holistic picture also check out “Leave Dem” and “Gal a Run Dem Head.” In “Gal a Run Dem Head” we get the story of gangsters who have women running their life, which allows for variation in style and content from “Click Mi Finger.”
The video for “Click Mi Finger” has finally arrived, as a sort of unofficial announcement of Erup’s arrival as international star. There were already videos for a few of his other songs as well as older versions of “Click Mi Finger.” While the song is undoubtedly catchy and fresh, the video lacks that extra umph, but is still enough to garner some new fans.
We happily salute Erup as a Fresh Baked Good making his way from Kingston sensation to a bigger international stage.
